Week 3, new comm tech

New communication technologies are continuiously growing. Users start using communication technologies today are mostly as young as 12 years old. I've been using Facebook for friends, Myspace for music and Twitter to check on celebritys' every move. I've been using myspace since I was 13 years old. The most influence or motivation were from friends who have these websites and want to stay in contact. Privacy issues are not of concerns to me and I think websites such as Facebook and Google should collect information about their users for safety and backup. For example if there is a criminal group planning out criminal activities on the net, the website can keep the information as evidence. I would however encourage people to have a private profile to protect from certain users in the public network from viewing personal information about other users. Having a private profile does not stop the user from adding 'strangers' but it all comes down to how much you trust that person when you get to know them. I have one or two friends whom I've met on the internet, we'd chat and send messages but I never intend to meet them in person, especially if that person is from overseas. Even though some people might not turn out to be how you thought they'd turn out to be, you must remember that meeting people via cyberspace is not the same as meeting them in person. Misunderstandings might occur when chatting on the internet because you cannot see how the other person is reacting towards you. This is communication in my perspective.

Qualitative Differences between 3D and IM

Questions of social identity in the socialising space always arise when people talk about social networking. social identity is however viewed differently according to the quality of network socialisation. The 3D experience is very different from an IM experience. Although you can express emotions with both through text and emoticons, the user does not get a full picture of who you are as a person and your identity. The 3D world offers a very realistic chat experience where there are avatars, scenes and a complete virtual world. A good example of 3D space are Second life and IMVU. MSN, Skype does not offer any virtual experience, it is simply a mean of communication between people as well as an image sharing tool. The way people understand others is different according to what service they are using, neither however can give a clear picture of the person's exact identity. For some people, their social networking identity is different to how it is in reality. Some people tend to be someone they are not as an affect of who they are communicating with as well as the medium used for the communication.

Week 5 lecture, Media

Virtual community is created by the individual identity where individuals create personal web pages; blogs, videos (YouTube), images and posting them on social networking sites by using web 2.0. This creates a personal relationship established by the user and shared with other users either the open public or friends. Although the websites claim that they do not own the contents being posted, they are allowed to tamper with the contents that are against the terms and conditions of the website contract. Social media consists of blogs/weblogs, social network services such as Facebook and Myspace and content sharing communities such as YouTube and Flickr.

"Hackers" have recently tampered with the social networking site Twitter for two days but users didn't seem much concerned. An article on newscientist.com has revealed that Twitter was hacked into by 'politically-motivated hackers' and that the incident has raised questions about the users' reaction to the shutting down of the website.

You can read all about it in the following link:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17578-innovation-why-dont-users-mind-when-twitter-breaks.html

Their view however is different from mine. I believe that communication is the main reason why the users of the site were not concerned with the incident. Many people use Facebook for their everyday communications with friends and relatives. While Twitter also offers communication options, it is more indirect communication. Twitter is used more for people to vent and update their every move and people can check the updates of the people they are following at a later time. Therefore facebook is a better, faster and more effective way to communicate with others.

Language of the Screen

The screen is a great, easy to understand tool for communication. Many people watch movies, documentaries and series for entertainment and not usually going in depth of how much work and technique has actually taken place to deliver a certain message to the viewer. A reason for this might be that people tend to focus on understanding the message given to them instead of analysing how it is delivered.

Screen shots reveal much more than a story. While they answer all the 5W's, Who, where, why, what, and when, they also show expressions, emotions, physical gestures and physical size. All these factors will affect the message conveyed to the viewer by how they are presented in the screen shots. Every single centimeter or inch will affect how the viewer sees and understands the message. Therefore to communicate effectively, every angle, scene, characters, expressions, gestures and props in the shot must be concise and competent.

internet to be shut down due to criminal activities

Have you ever imagined a world without the Internet? Where all technologies will cost half price only for the reason that it cannot surf the net? The iPhone itself would be just a regular touchscreen phone only with no access to Twitter or Facebook. Who knows maybe there wont be any social networking websites and people might actually communicate in person!

ABC is suggesting that the Internet is a major tool in organised crimes and it allows 'hackers' or computer criminals to hack into your computer and infect it with computer programs called malware. This allows the 'hacker' to manipulate and use the computer for their own benefit.

On the other hand of this saga, fortunately, shutting down the internet will come as a last resort. In the mean time there are other ways to how this can be dealt with. It all hangs in the hands of the people who are using the net and their responsibilities. Solving the issue however is highly complicated or even impossible but shutting down the internet will have major effects on people, businesses and the whole value of communication.

this video is very interesting as it takes the viewers to where communication technology is heading, specifically with mobile phones and their access to the internet and social networking websites such as facebook and twitter. I find it very interesting how new technology encourages people to communicate within cyberspace and social networking sites.

Random picture of steve wozniak...

For those who don't know...
This is Steve Wozniak, an American computer engineer... This picture was found on Flickr
The first lecture of New communications technology, the class watched a video called "Cocaine" a text only video by Stefano Boscutti. Of course the lecturor showed us that to get us invloved as there are curse words and a scenario that any one can relate to, right?

Well, not really, it was also to show us that such a simple thing can be made by anyone by using simple prongrams such as movie maker. Although, it doesn't have much views but the text only video really captures the audience. I don't know about other people but I personally liked it, very creative.
